On June 17, 2015, Ottawa-based Caribbean high commissions and embassies jointly hosted a reception at Ottawa City Hall marking 42 years of CARICOM’s existence. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) brings together 15 states in the Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Haiti, Jamaica, Grenada, Guyana, Montserrat, St. Lucia, Suriname, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. Among the speakers at this year’s Ottawa celebration were Hon. Deepak Obhrai (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights), H.E. Harry Narine Nawbatt (outgoing High Commissioner of the Republic of Guyana to Canada), and H.E. Frantz Liautaud (Ambassador of Haiti to Canada). This colourful event included performances by Nepean Panharmonic Steel Band and gospel artist Ferline Regis, displays of various Caribbean products as well as Island cuisine.
