A tribute to Special Mother,
by Ken Campbell
My mother, , was born and raised in Jamaica and migrated to Canada when she was a twenty seven year old. She arrived in Montreal in November 1969 leaving her children in the care of her sister in Jamaica. During her stay in Montreal, she worked many long hours as a waitress, sending money home to Jamaica to support her children.
She quickly learned to adapt to the cold weather. In her words: “When I first arrived in Canada, everything was strange and it was very cold, but I adjusted to the cold and accustomed myself to the culture here and adopted Canada as my own country”.
My mother was aware of the Social Services and subsidized housing programs in Montreal, but being a proud and independent person, she chose not to access these programs. Instead, she relied on her own strength, ability, resilience, and work ethic to support her family. After many years of working and contributing to her community, she was able to sponsor her children (all 7 of us) to join her in Canada in 1976.
My mother believed that hard work, dedication and persistence are the key to achieving the Canadian dream and she preached and instilled these values in all her children.
We have all grown up to be responsible members of our respective communities. The value of community, family, and culture are foundational qualities that have shaped our lives.
My mother believes that what could be perceived as barriers or challenges, are really only stepping stones for growth and development. She states that, “I don’t see too many challenges…I’m very independent as far as I see it. I don’t depend on people to do anything for me. Canada is a great country…they look after their seniors as far I’m concerned. There is has a lot of social programs and activities for seniors that is available …that is not available in Jamaica.”
My mother retired in 1996 and moved to Ottawa with her husband. This was a new phase in her life which allowed her the opportunity to volunteer her free time in helping out at her church by organizing and planning many social outings and activities for her peers. Her involvement in the churches and subsequent engagement and participation in Jaku Konbit’s programs has helped her to contribute her skills, experience and wisdom to the larger community.
My mother has been a true trail blazer. She is an inspirational role model and an exceptionally loving, and caring person who lives and demonstrates the value of sharing, supporting and helping others.
