The BlackNorth Initiative welcomes Dahabo Ahmed-Omer as the Chief Executive Officer.
Dahabo Ahmed-Omer brings a wealth of experience and accomplishments in diversity, equity, and inclusion. She stands as a strong role model, particularly to members of all-Black communities, and has played a transformative role in improving the quality of life of underserved communities. In her most recent experience as the Executive Director, she effectively led the BlackNorth Initiative’s work to create generational change and empower Black communities across Canada. In partnership with industry leaders, Dahabo Ahmed-Omer is shaping a new path forward that includes Black Canadians by taking significant actions to address systemic anti-Black racism in all aspects of our society.
“I am truly honoured to lead our extraordinarily dedicated team. This evolution speaks to the visionary leadership of our Board of Directors, the maturity of our organization, and its continued growth. As our organization works towards the goal of increasing Black leadership across the country, there is a striking gap of representation in corporate Canada, and I am a firm believer that we need more Black women at the C-suite level,” says Dahabo Ahmed-Omer, Chief Executive Officer of the BlackNorth Initiative. “This shift leads the example on how we can eradicate systemic barriers that Black women continue to face in Canada’s corporate landscape.”
Prior to her work with BlackNorth, Dahabo Ahmed-Omer was a well-known policy advisor and human rights advocate. She sits on the Federation of Black Canadians board of directors, co-founded the Justice for Abdirahman coalition, and was director of operations for the Somali Centre for Family Services.
The BlackNorth Initiative was founded in June of 2020 as a vehicle to combat anti-Black racism, by increasing the representation of Blacks in boardrooms and executive suites across Canada. The Initiative asks senior business leaders to commit to actions and targets that would directly challenge anti-Black racism and intentionally create space for BIPOC in boardrooms and offices of power and influence.
