Hello all
The Ontario elections are over and thank goodness the good people of the province saw past the negative ads and personal attacks to return the Liberals to power. That said, the new government now has the herculean task of turning the province’s runaway debt burden to a positive surplus, meaning tough economic decisions in the short term at least. Just as importantly, they have to address the scandals that dogged the previous government and bring to book anyone, I mean anyone, found culpable. Turning to the sporting scene, the World Cup has us all enthralled as African teams struggle to make it to the knockout stages. Sadly highly rated Cote’ D’Ivoire is out, from a last minute dubious Greece penalty. But such is soccer, anything can happen. Ghana gave it all it had but it just wasn’t their day. And Nigeria made it to the last 16, only to fall to former champions France. As for Cameroon, the less said the better; only serial biter Uruguayan Luis Suarez’s latest escapade could eclipse the African team’s disgraceful behavior in front of millions of fans world wide.
For July we have a whole bunch of goodies for our readers. Top of the pops is the annual Community Cup of soccer which as usual drew hundreds of fans for this annual celebration of cultural diversity and welcoming of immigrants to Ottawa. More stuff from the Welcoming Ottawa Week launch, World Refugee Day, YMCA Multiculturalism Day and the Black Canadian Scholarship Fund walk-a-thon to raise funds for their grants. On the social side we have the vibrant and vastly entertaining Carivibe at Petrie Island and the St. Vincent & Grenadines Dance for a Cause. Our guest columnist Justina Ikwu continues to excel with her piece on coping with cultural diversity. And for People making a Difference we feature the lovely volunteer extraordinaire, Petronila Michael.
And last but not the least, we invite you to take part in our monthly survey, this time on your reacton to a person’s sexual orientation.
Enjoy
