2016 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Do you know a person, group or program working to build a better Ottawa through community engagement, volunteer work, philanthropy, community outreach, mentoring and nurturing of children and youth, advocacy, elder support and advocacy, community safety or crime prevention? Now is the time to nominate them for the 2016 Black History Ottawa Community Builder award. The awards program honours those making a significant contribution to the quality of life of Ottawa’s diverse community.
Who is eligible?
You can nominate any individual or organisation of people of African, Caribbean or Black descent, you feel has made an outstanding contribution to improving the quality of life for the people of Ottawa. He/she must also be resident in the Ottawa region. Previous winners represent people from all walks of life: volunteers, police officers, city staff, students, community leaders, religious leaders, teachers, student organisations, and educational institutions. They all have one thing in common: they are passionate about making Ottawa a great place to live. Self nominations will not be accepted.
Award categories
The program has two award categories. When submitting your nomination, you do not need to specify which award you are recommending. Black History Ottawa will select the appropriate award category. The categories are:
Community Leadership
Each nominee in this category must be: at least 18 years of age; an active leader in his/her community; made a positive difference in such areas as community building, human rights, multiculturalism;- have a minimum of five years experience as a volunteer, community activist or advocate; made exemplary contribution through unique programs or initiatives benefiting his/her neighborhood or community.
Youth Leadership
Candidates for this category must: be between 13 and 25 years of age; enrolled full or part-time in high school, college or university; a positive role model as a volunteer, school leader or community advocate; made exemplary contribution through unique programs or initiatives benefiting his/her school, neighborhood or community.
Selection of award winners Nominations will be reviewed and winners selected by the Board of Directors of Black History Ottawa.
Nomination procedures To nominate an individual, group or program, please provide the following information:
– Your name – Your e-mail address – Your phone number – Name of candidate – Candidate’s e-mail – Candidate’s phone number – Your relationship with candidate (friend, family member, member of your organisation etc), – A summary listing of candidate’s community activities and accomplishments and previous awards(if applicable), other relevant information. Maximum 700 word please. Use an attachment if necessary.
Please note: Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominations with incomplete information will not be considered. Mail the above information to Black History Ottawa at: [email protected].
Important dates
- Completed nominations must be received by Black History Ottawa no later than 30 December, 2015.
- Successful candidates and nominators will be notified byFriday, 15 January,
- Mark your calendars! The Community Builder Awards will be presented at the 2016 Black History Month Launch and Opening on Saturday 30 January 2016, at St. Paul’s University auditorium.
- Nominations received after the deadline of 30 December 2015 will not be considered.

- Member of Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa
What we do:
- Celebrate the contributions of Black People to the Canadian mosaic;
- Support local artists, designers, writers and innovators;
- Organize child and youth-centered mentorship and leadership programs;
- Organize community centered activities.
As a non-profit organization, Black History Ottawa depends entirely on membership fees and donations to carry out its work and does not receive government funding.
