Doris May Campbell (October 9, 1923 – June 6, 2015)

Doris Campbell passed away peacefully on June 6, 2015 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Albert Campbell and loved member of the Campbell family. Loving sister of Adlin Bruce. Cherished Aunt of Jennifer, Vena, Evonne and Roy. Proud great-aunt of Carol, Odette, Fay, Alecia, Dianne, Jesse, Carle, Elise and Jason. Long time valued member of the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church. She will be greatly missed by her many family members and friends. Many thanks to the staff at St. Vincent Elizabeth Bruyère for taking care of Aunt Doris in her last days. The funeral service took place at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Friday, June 19, and was followed by a Celebration of Life at St. Matthew’s Anglican.
Considered one of the “pioneers” of Ottawa’s Jamaican community, Mrs. Campbell was among the first wave of young ladies who migrated to Canada in the early 1950s under the West Indian Domestic Scheme. She subsequently sponsored other family members who came to this country in the years that followed. Mrs. Campbell is featured in a recent documentary produced by Jaku Konbit about several women who arrived in Canada under this government program.
