An Ottawa Police officer has returned from Cambodia, where she spent nearly a year investigating the war crimes of the Khmer Rouge regime.
Staff Sgt. Isobel Granger was part of an international team investigating the atrocities committed in Cambodia between 1975 and 1979, from the forced exodus of millions of people from their homes to rapes and mass killings. Nearly 2-million people are believed to have died.
“When we realized the magnitude of what we were going to be doing there, it’s kind of overwhelming, but it’s also exhilarating at the same time because you know that you’re getting involved in something that’s going to contribute to a significant change in many aspects, including the healing of a nation, including getting justice for people who were subject to the war crimes perpetrated on them by the Khmer Rouge,” she said. “It was an incredible feeling.”
During her time in Cambodia, Granger led several field missions and interviewed dozens of victims. War crimes charges were laid against three individuals during her time working under the purview of the Extraordinary Chambers in Courts of Cambodia.
The investigation into the war crimes continues.
