On July 10, 2015, Rwandan Chargée d’Affaires Shakilla K. Umutoni hosted an Independence and Liberation Day reception at the Chateau Laurier. Diplomats, community leaders, Rwandans from Ottawa and beyond as well as their non-Rwandan friends gathered to mark the 21st anniversary of the country’s liberation following the 1994 100-day genocide against the Tutsi, which left a million people dead in that country. Highlights of the event included speeches by Ms. Umutoni and a representative of the Canadian government as well as colourful traditional dances performed by a Rwandan folk dance group.
