Canadian War Museum hosts Remembrance Day memorial for Black veterans

by Sarah Onyango, Black History Ottawa community Outreach Officer

I spent part 2 of my 2024 Remembrance Day at the Canadian War Museum with my Legacy Voices colleague Kathy Grant, her intern Julissa, the 2004 National Silver Cross Mother, Agatha Dyer, the same group of union folks I’d met at the War Memorial, my Black History Ottawa colleague Jean Marie Guerrier, and No. 2 Construction Battalion descendant Robert Downey. There was a historic photo op near the West Indian WW II Patriots plaque with the museum’s CEO featuring a commemorative plaque honouring the No 2 as well as a set of medals that belonged to Guyanese-born Sydney Flood, who was a member of that battalion. We later were treated to a private tour of several fascinating exhibits.
