The Nigerian Canadian Association Ottawa was invited Tuesday May 6, 2015 by the House of Commons All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes against Humanity, chaired by MP Paul Dewar.
We were asked to make a presentation on the issue of terrorism and non-state actors, particularly the cases of ISIS and Boko Haram.
Professor Jabeur Fathally of the University of Ottawa Law Department made presentation as relates to ISIS while John Adeyefa NCAO President made presentation on Boko Haram in collaboration with Mr. Adamu Kabir and Mr. Emeka Ndukwe.
We provided the Members of Parliaments with the background information that led to Boko Haram, the real meaning of Boko Haram, events timeline, the current situation and our recommendation to the All Party Parliamentary Group and Canadian Government.
Some of our recommendations are as follows;
- Appealed for Canada Government to Support the New Nigeria incoming Government.
- Canadian Government to Partner with the New incoming Government by building capacity to challenge the insurgency.
- Work on the Anti-Terror Bill dealing with insurgency issue in Canada and outside.
- Assist Nigeria incoming Govt on Poverty Alleviation Programs, reconciliation and rebuilding destroyed villages as well as resettlement of widows and orphan.
In the audience were several MPs, House of Commons Staffs, Human Rights Organisations, like the Yezidi Group who are being killed by ISIS.
The Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group MP Paul Dewar indicated that he learnt a lot of new information and now current on the issue of Boko Haram Terrorism in Nigeria. He promised to forward our presentation to other Members of Parliament.
