St. Albans Church in the heart of downtown Ottawa was a hive of activity on Sunday 9 February as a small but enthusiastic audience gathered for the annual reconciliation Day, organised by Black History Ottawa’s Vice President June Girvan. As usual, the event was a pivotal part of the national capital’s Black History Month celebrations. The focus this year was to commemorate and honour two cultural icons, First Nations Chief Elder William Commanda and South Africa’s legendary Nelson Mandela who passed away in 2013. Performances by songstress Angelique Francis, Women’s drummers led by Minnie Matoush and tributes to the two heroes of our time, marked a day of reflections on the legacy they left behind.
