About thirty of Ottawa’s seniors were at the YMCA-YWCA on Argyle Avenue to learn how to protect themselves from abuse as well as get tips on how to live on a reduced income. The seminar was organised by Black History Ottawa, with support from a grant from the Government of Canada New Horizons for Seniors’ program. Constable Matt Hunt of the Ottawa Police spoke about elder abuse and provided tips on how to spot the signs of abuse, especially from family members. RBC Royal Bank of Canada Customer Services rep Thomas Westfall spoke about strategies for managing one’s finances on a reduced income, caused by retirement. His topics included RRSP’s, RRIF’s, Mutual funds, Tax Free Savings Accounts and reverse mortgages. During the break, fitness guru Tarrah Mauricette led the participants through stretches to maintain healthy muscles and bone structures.
